Youth and staff from Maui Hui Malama took part in two events that were part of the Indigenous Crop Biodiversity Festival held on Maui during the week of August 24 through 30.

At the Bailey House Museum on Friday

On Friday, August 26, we hosted guests at the Bailey House Museum, offering demonstrations of lei-making and discussing Hawaiian cultural practices. One guest was a journalist who reports on third-world issues for the United Nations.

At the Tropical Plantation on Saturday

Participating in the main festival at the Maui Tropical Plantation on Saturday, August 27, youth gave demonstrations of pounding taro – ku’i kalo – to make pa’i’ai, a precursor to poi, the traditional Hawaiian food. They educated visitors about the practice, and shared samples. After many hours of ku’i kalo, they also pitched in to break down the event site.
