Hui Malama honored their students who passed the high school equivalency test, or GED, in a Commencement ceremony held on May 23, 2012. Guests were treated to entertainment by Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee, Ahumanu. The Honorable Mayor Alan Arakawa and Mentor Matt Lane of Community Work Day gave congratulatory speeches. Council member and alumna, Elle Cochran, presented the promotion certificates, and Hau’oli Tomoso of Hui No Ke Ola Pono emceed the event.

Middle school and high school program students were also recognized. Six students were awarded three special awards. Nicole Nakagawa and Kamaile Ka’ahanui-Kepano received the Laulima Award for high academic achievement and performance. Nohea Chartrand and Eala Kamai received the ‘Ohia Award, which is given to students who are a symbol of strength, perseverance, and determination in the face of adversity. For “Living Aloha” while pursuing academic achievements as a student of Hui Malama, and in memory of a beloved former teacher, The MaryAnn Nakama Award was presented to Keoki Muralt and Kianna Muralt.
