Last fall, several Maui Hui Malama clients learned practical and marketable skills through courses in the UH Maui College Building Maintenance Certificate program. Then, with the instructor and other students pitching in, they tried out their new skills, making repairs around the Maui Hui Malama building.
Even as technology changes daily, these skills will always be needed. It can be very satisfying to recognize and solve a problem to improve one’s immediate environment.
Cliff Rutherford was the instructor for all three classes:
Building Maintenance Basics, which introduced the fundamentals of building systems, and operations of maintenance departments for commercial and residential buildings, and gave participants hands-on experience in essential repair and maintenance best practices.
Blueprint Reading Basics & Materials Estimating, which introduced fundamentals of blueprint reading, interpreting and specifications, and provided a practical overview and examples of how to estimate material costs for building maintenance and construction projects.
Residential & Commercial Painting Techniques, which introduced materials and reviewed techniques for residential and commercial painting. The participants got hands-on experience and practice painting with brushes and sprayers.
